BarrierGuard 800 has been introduced into the UK market to help increase safety standards for both the public
and workforces in traffic management schemes. Its ease of transport and speed of installation over more traditional concrete
barriers enable designers and contractors to increase safety standards within acceptable cost and timescales.
BarrierGuard 800 is a robust deformable steel safety barrier that stops errant vehicles by absorbing their
energy through a combination of self-weight and catenary action.
Designed as a smooth-faced steel barrier with a unique stepped profile, BarrierGuard 800 gives a high level of protection to
both the travelling public and those in the work zone by providing continuous physical separation.
Mabey Support Systems is one of the UK's leading suppliers of BarrierGuard 800 which is
approved by the Highways Agency and Scottish Roads Authority and is being used extensively to improve safety standards
on the motorway and trunk roads networks in England, Scotland and Wales.
The system has been designed with safety and speed of installation in mind. Each section of steel barrier is 12m long and
features the patented Quickmount boltless connections at each end. This rapid and precise in built method
of connection ensures that installation times are kept to an absolute minimum
reducing cost, disruption to the public and risk to the installation teams.
BarrierGuard 800 can now be used for curved applications on radii as small as 69m. The
barrier's flexibility has been enhanced by the addition of 6m barrier units and 2.5° and 5° angled sections.
All of these units feature the unique QuickMount joints and BarrierGuard profile to ensure that the performance of
the barrier is maintained.
BarrierGuard 800 now offers an Emergency Access Point (EAP) as part of
the range of accessories available. The EAP has been engineered to provide a safe and 'simple to operate' access through
the barrier for the emergency services should this be required. The EAP can be supplied in lengths from 6m upwards
configured to suit individual requirements.
The BarrierGuard 800 has undergone extensive full scale testing and complies with BS EN 1317
containment levels H2, N1 and N2 and meets the standards for temporary steel
barriers under the Highways Agency document IRRRS Chapters 2 and 7.

The above deflection figures are achieved using a barrier anchored at each end.
The calculation for the deflections at different velocities was taken using the basic formula from BS6779
which states that
BarrierGuard 800 standard units can be used to a minimum working radius of 380m.
The system incorporates a series of angled sections that can be added to reduce the minimum radius to 60m.
Emergency Access Points that can be used to create an opening for emergency vehicles are available as standard units within
the BarrierGuard range.
Installation is normally carried out by three man crews working with a Hiab equipped articulated vehicle. Up to 216m of
BarrierGuard can be carried on a single vehicle. Each three man crew can install in excess of 1km of Barrier in a single
10-hour shift.
Training courses approved by the Lantra Awards Accreditation Service conforming to Sector Scheme 2b
are available to contractors staff - BarrierGuard should only be installed by personnel trained to this standard.
BarrierGuard anchors are normally only required at each end of a run. Fixings are available for both
flexible and rigid surfacing.
For flexible surfacing 4 No. 32mm diameter holes are drilled to a depth of 500mm in the carriageway and 32mm diameter 450mm long
steel pins are then dropped into the holes to secure the barrier.
In concrete carriageways the steel pins are replaced with an M24 Hilti type fixing drilled 180mm into the carriageway.
Intermediate anchors can be provided along the length of the barrier if required to further reduce deflection
for individual uses.
BarrierGuard 800 now offers an Emergency Access Point (EAP) as part of the range of accessories
available. The EAP has been engineered to provide a safe and 'simple to operate' access through the barrier for emergency
services should this be required. The EAP can be supplied in lengths from 6m upwards configured to suit individual requirements.
